ShopRite Contest Seeks Hunger-Fighting Heroes

Keasbey, NJ (Sept. 6, 2018) – ShopRite is looking for hunger-fighting heroes with a contest to recognize people who go above and beyond to get food to their neighbors in need.

ShopRite Partners In Caring (SRPIC), a community-based, hunger-fighting initiative that supports more than 2,100 charities in the communities where ShopRite stores operate, is about to enter its 20th year. To mark that milestone and twenty years of good, ShopRite is looking for people who work in their communities to help feed the hungry.

Twenty contest winners will receive $1,000 each for their favorite Feeding America hunger-fighting charity and a $100 ShopRite gift card. The grand prize winner will also receive two VIP tickets to the New York City Wine & Food Festival in 2019. The VIP package includes hotel accommodations, a cooking class, special festival events and spending money.

A special panel of judges, including representatives from General Mills, ShopRite and the Community Foundation of New Jersey, will judge the nominations based on volunteer impact, inspiration and innovation. The contest runs through October 20, 2018 and winners will be announced in December.

As family-owned and operated businesses, ShopRite stores are committed to helping neighbors in need. Since its founding in 1999, ShopRite Partners In Caring has donated $48 million to hunger-fighting partners such as soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, senior centers, and other organizations that are on the front lines of fighting hunger in the community. Forty-one million people struggle with hunger in the United States, including 13 million children and five million seniors, according to Feeding America, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that feed more than 46 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other community-based organizations.

“We are so pleased to kick off a year of celebration and reflection on 20 years of good with ShopRite Partners in Caring by recognizing our partners in the community,” said ShopRite spokesperson Karen Meleta. “We have hunger-fighting heroes right in our own neighborhoods and they are working to relieve the effects of hunger and poverty in the communities where our stores operate. We are proud to recognize this special group of people through this contest.”

SRPIC works closely with vendor partners such as General Mills and Cheerios to fight hunger, rallying ShopRite associates to help raise money and awareness around the issue of hunger. Those efforts kick into high gear each September, Hunger Action Month, when store associates host fund-raising efforts in store and at checkout. ShopRite stores raise over $1 million each fall in the annual fight against hunger, and the top fund-raising associates and hunger-fighting heroes get their pictures on special edition Cheerios boxes the following March, 2019.
