Wakefern Food Corp. Appoints New Member to the Board of Directors

Keasbey, NJ — Wakefern Food Corp., the nation’s largest retailer-owned cooperative with member companies that own and operate supermarkets under the ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market banners, has named experienced grocer Sandra Brown as a new member of the cooperative’s Board of Directors.

Brown, executive vice president and chairwoman of Brown’s Super Stores, Inc., a fourth-generation family business that operates 10 ShopRite and two The Fresh Grocer supermarkets in Philadelphia and the surrounding area, was appointed to the board recently.

She  brings  extensive experience in the grocery business to her new role as a Wakefern Board Member.

“I am excited to congratulate and welcome Sandra to our Wakefern’s Board of Directors,” said Wakefern Chairman Joseph Colalillo. “She shares an entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community and family business that is so important to the Wakefern cooperative.”

For nearly three decades, Sandra Brown has helped run her family company, Brown’s Super Stores, Inc., while also playing a key role in the community. She has worked diligently to improve access to fresh foods, increase employment opportunities and support community-based programs that foster job creation in Philadelphia. She works alongside her husband, Jeffrey Brown, whose grandparents and parents founded the business. The couple’s son, Josh, was also recently named CFO for the company. Brown’s Super Stores has been recognized for as The Best Employer in the Philadelphia region by the Philadelphia Business Journal – a credit to Brown’s hard work at the helm of her company.

Brown also plays a key role at Wakefern and serves as chair of Wakefern’s Customer Experience committee, vice-chair of the Retail Technology committee and as a member of the Digital Commerce and Analytics committees. She shares her business expertise with fellow Wakefern Members and small business owners and entrepreneurs in her home city of Philadelphia, where she helped create a business incubator through her ShopRite stores for start-up and minority-owned businesses.
