Fairleigh Dickinson University Recognizes Wakefern with Sustainability Award

It’s Earth Day and we’re proud to announce that Wakefern recently received an award for its sustainable practices.

Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Institute for Sustainable Enterprise (ISE) proclaimed Wakefern an “outstanding sustainable family-owned business” at its 10th anniversary celebration. Wakefern Community Relations Manager Christine Magyarits accepted the award on behalf of the cooperative.

Over 175 people attended the event, held April 7 at the Westin Governor Morris Hotel in Morristown. Wakefern joined a collection of honorees that included Verizon, Alcoa and PSE&G.

“Our ShopRite stores have a longstanding commitment to the community to offer affordable groceries while also being environmentally and socially responsible,” said Suzanne Forbes, Wakefern’s environmental affairs administrator.

“Our family-owned stores are dedicated to recycling, donating food and composting methods to reduce waste. Our ShopRite owners and operators also invest in energy-saving, state-of-the-art technology to reduce the environmental footprint of their stores.”

The ISE has spent the past 10 years as “a catalyst, thought leadership and research hub for sustainable enterprise in New Jersey and beyond.” The group leans on local businesses like Wakefern to help resolve complex environmental issues.
