Price Rite Marketplace and University at Buffalo Football Team Partner to “Sack Hunger”
Amherst, NY (February 23, 2022) Price Rite Marketplace and the University at Buffalo football program donated 24 sacks of food to the New Beginnings Food Pantry today. The donation is a result of the organizations’ annual Sack Hunger campaign, designed to help tackle food insecurity in the Amherst community.
As part of the partnership, Price Rite Marketplace donates a “sack” of groceries that includes canned goods and fresh produce, along with full pallets of shelf stable food products, such as rice, cereals and others, to the New Beginnings Food Pantry from Amherst Baptist Church. The number of sacks donated reflects the sacks recorded by the football team. A sack takes place when the quarterback is tackled by the defense for a loss of yards before a pass is thrown.
“Thanks to the generous partnership with the University at Buffalo Football Team, we’re able to give back to the Amherst community year after year through the New Beginnings Food Pantry,” said Kevin McDonnell, president, Price Rite Marketplace. “We look forward to continuing this partnership and building strong communities here and in all of the communities Price Rite serves.”
This year Buffalo recorded 24 sacks, and in doing so helped individuals and families facing food insecurity throughout Amherst and surrounding areas. For the 2022 season, the Bulls finished with an overall record of 7-6 and defeated Georgia Southern to win the Camellia Bowl.
“We’re thankful to continue this partnership with Price Rite Marketplace to support the New Beginnings Food Pantry again this year by donating 24 sacks of food,” UB football head coach Maurice Linguist said. “Our team is proud to call Buffalo and Western New York home and we will continue supporting our communities through hunger-fighting initiatives like Sack Hunger.”
The Sack Hunger program kicked off in September 2018 as an integrated relationship with University at Buffalo Athletics and its multimedia rights holder, Learfield’s Bulls Sports Properties. The “Sack Hunger” fundraising campaign is part of a joint effort to tackle hunger locally through a season-long promotion in partnership with the UB Football team. Since the program’s inception, more than 150 sacks of food have been donated to the New Beginnings Food Pantry.
At this year’s event, held on February 23 at the Price Rite Marketplace of Amherst, Price Rite associates joined coaches from the University at Buffalo football, to present the sacks of food to representatives from New Beginnings Food Pantry from Amherst Baptist Church.
