EPA Recognizes Ravitz Family Markets for Outstanding Efforts in the Food Recovery Challenge

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently recognized the accomplishments of Ravitz Family Markets for its participation in its Food Recovery Challenge program, reducing climate footprint, improving efficiency, helping communities and achieving cost savings through waste reduction. A member of the Wakefern Food Corp. cooperative and led by a family of second and third generation grocers, Ravitz Family Markets owns and operates five ShopRite stores in southern New Jersey.

Wakefern Food Corp. Announces $14.7 Billion in Retail Sales

Wakefern Food Corp.’s chairman and CEO, Joseph S. Colalillo, and president and COO,  Joe Sheridan, addressed Wakefern’s shareholders, store management and staff at the company’s annual shareholder meeting in East Brunswick, New Jersey on October 30, 2014. The company reported that the cooperative had reached a record sales level of $14.7 billion in retail sales for the fiscal year ending September 27, 2014, a four percent increase from the same period last year, and $11.9 billion in Wakefern sales.

McMenamin Family ShopRite announced today that it has named Sean McMenamin president of the company.  McMenamin, age 36, succeeds his father, company founder Rich McMenamin, who remains as chairman of McMenamin Family ShopRite, a family business which owns and operates two ShopRite stores in Philadelphia.

Wakefern Joins On-The-Job-Training Initiative as Employer Committed to Employee Union County Residents

In March and early April Wakefern hosted job recruitment fairs at two of its warehouse locations including Keasbey, NJ and Elizabeth, NJ. Both locations attracted more than 40 Union County applicants hoping to land on-the-job-training (OJT) opportunities in the warehouses. The unemployed applicants were seeking jobs in warehousing through an OJT initiative administered by the Elizabeth Development Company in partnership with the Union County Workforce Investment Board and City of Elizabeth.

The 2012 Food Recovery Challenge Award for Endorsers is awarded to companies that create a foundation of innovation and achievement that can serve as a model for other organizations as they pursue sustainable business practices.

Wakefern Launches Sustainable Seafood Program

Wakefern Food Corp., a retailer-owned cooperative whose members own and operate ShopRite and Fresh Grocer branded supermarkets, announced today that in its ongoing effort to achieve seafood sustainability, it has partnered with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) and will increasingly source wild-caught and farm-raised seafood for processing in its facility that meets one of these certification standards.
