ShopRite Hosts Sixth Annual Island Beach Dune Grass Planting
WHAT: More than 100 New Jersey ShopRite associates will join representatives from the Friends of Island Beach for the Sixth Annual Beach Dune Grass Planting this Saturday, June 7th from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm.
Each year, ShopRite volunteers, along with local community organizations and vendors – partner with Friends of Island Beach State Park to replant dune grass along the shoreline. With the mission of furthering public appreciation and stewardship of the park, the Friends of Island Beach State Park is a non-profit volunteer organization formed to enhance its interpretive, educations, recreational & research programs, and events.
American Beach Grass is one of the few plants that grows on the primary dunes at Island Beach State Park and serves as the first line of defense in protecting the beach from the wind, waves and storms that would otherwise destroy the plant communities and habitat of the barrier island. Replanting beach grass along dunes that have eroded protects areas beyond the dunes from the impact of the Atlantic Ocean.
Additional volunteers at this year’s planting include members of Community Access Unlimited, an organizations that supports people with special needs, and ShopRite vendor partner UNFI Specialty Distribution Services, a national distributor of natural, organic and specialty foods.
