Manchester, N.J., October 19
– ShopRite and Pfizer Consumer Healthcare unveiled an outdoor senior fitness center Wednesday at scenic Harry Wright Lake Park in Manchester, N.J. The unique system is designed to help older adults exercise to improve balance and coordination. The outdoor fitness equipment features more than a dozen activities – including a rope bridge, stair walk, rope course and balance beam.
“We are thrilled to receive this generous donation at Harry Wright Lake Park, where our seniors can now meet and socialize while also working on staying fit. This smart partnership between Pfizer and ShopRite recognizes that seniors, as the fastest growing segment of the population, have different needs,” said Manchester Mayor Kenneth Palmer.
ShopRite is encouraging local seniors to enjoy the outdoors and exercise while also making it easier for them to shop. The ShopRite of Manchester is training associates to understand the mobility challenges some older customers face – challenges that can make it more difficult to shop. The store is also making dietitians available to assist older shoppers with healthy meal planning. It’s an important community approach in Manchester Township, where more than half the population is age 65 or older.
“We are excited to help unveil this senior motion center at Harry Wright Lake Park. ShopRite is proud to be part of this collaboration to help our customers and the residents of this community live fuller, more active lives. We look forward to helping people in store as they shop and will remind them to check out the nearby senior motion center,” said Joel Perlmutter, owner and operator of the ShopRite of Manchester
“Approximately 10,000 people in the U.S. turn 65 each day,” said Lisa Paley, chief customer officer at Pfizer Consumer Healthcare. “The World Health Organization says that one-third of those over age 65 suffer falls at least once a year. We believe adult fitness systems like this one can help seniors stay physically active and maintain their balance and coordination skills,” she said. “In addition to socialization and community-based support, physical activity is a key component to continued well-being and independence for older adults.”
The system was designed by Xccent Fitness. The Wyoming, Minn.-based business has built nearly 300 similar installations around the country.
The Oct. 19 ribbon cutting was attended by Manchester Chief of Police Lisa Parker, EMS Coordinator Art Abline, Senior Services Director Brenda Sloan and the Manchester High School ROTC.
