Howard Park (May 3, 2013) – On Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 10:00 am the long awaited groundbreaking of the ShopRite of Howard Park will take place. The Klein Family, in collaboration with the City of Baltimore, will begin development of the new ShopRite of Howard Park, located at 4601 Liberty Heights Avenue in Baltimore, MD, restoring a long abandoned site in the local community. The Klein Family also opened the ShopRite of Parkville in the Parkway Crossing Shopping Center in June of 2012.
Many elected officials, including Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, State Senator Lisa Gladden and City Council President Bernard “Jack” Young, will be in attendance for this official groundbreaking ceremony.
“Our family is looking forward to starting the construction phase of this project and to bringing a neighborhood ShopRite to the Howard Park community,” said Marshall Klein, Chief Operating Officer of Klein’s Family Markets. The new ShopRite of Howard Park will bring more than 200 jobs when it opens next year.
“We are very excited that our collaboration between Mayor Rawlings-Blake, the Baltimore City Council, the State of Maryland, the Baltimore Development Corporation and the Howard Park Civic Association, has made this significant project a reality. The city has worked diligently to help reach this milestone and we are grateful for their support,” said Jeffrey Brown, Chairman of UpLift Solutions.
The Klein family has acquired the land for the supermarket project, as well as the necessary financing through a partnership of The Reinvestment Fund, City First Bank, the US Department of Health and Human Services, the US Department of the Treasury’s New Markets Tax Credit program, JP Morgan Chase Bank and the Opportunity Finance Network.
“TRF is excited to work on this project with ShopRite and the operators of this store who have a strong commitment to the local community that is evident in the features built into this supermarket,” said Don Hinkle-Brown, CEO of TRF. “In addition to bringing healthy food and new jobs, this supermarket will include a health clinic and community rooms that will offer nutrition education programs for an adjacent school and the community as a whole.”
The development of the ShopRite of Howard Park will be assisted by UpLift Solutions, a non-profit created to help supermarkets open in locations that lack access to healthy and affordable food. This project was also recognized by The First Lady, Michelle Obama as part of her “Let’s Move” initiative.
In addition to a broad array of groceries and fresh produce, the ShopRite of Howard Park will offer a fresh bake shop, fresh meat cut to order and fresh seafood delivered daily. Natural, organic and gluten-free products will be available in every department of the store and a full-service pharmacy will be located onsite. The store will also provide the convenience of freshly prepared foods for quick and easy meals, including: hot entrees and side dishes, hearty soups, rotisserie and fried chicken and many ready-to-heat items. The brand new ShopRite of Howard Park will also feature a wide selection of international foods, including produce, meat and grocery items from around the world.
