BELOVED COMMUNITY CHARTER SCHOOL WINS TERRACYCLE’S “RECYCLED PLAYGROUND CHALLENGE”
JERSEY CITY, N.J., (October 27 , 2014) – BelovED Community Charter School of Jersey City is the winner of the Recycled Playground Challenge, courtesy of Colgate, the global oral care leader; ShopRite, which has more than 250 stores in the Northeast; and recycling pioneer TerraCycle®. The three year old school has won a brand-new recycled playground made from oral care waste.
BelovED Community Charter School earned a total of 178,303 Playground Credits by recycling waste and through online voting to win the contest. The playground, which was built using recycled toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and floss containers collected through the Colgate® Oral Care Brigade® program, will be unveiled at a ceremony November 4, 2014 at 9:00 in the morning. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop; city officials; Colgate, ShopRite and TerraCycle representatives; school board members and students of BelovED will all be present to celebrate the unveiling.
The Recycled Playground Challenge launched in ShopRite stores March 2014 as a way to engage schools throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut and Maryland to participate in the Colgate® Oral Care Brigade, a free recycling program operated by Colgate and TerraCycle. During the contest window, participating schools earned Playground Credits for each shipment of empty toothpaste tubes, floss containers and toothbrushes sent to TerraCycle by June 30, 2014 and earned additional Playground Credits by encouraging parents and teachers to vote online.
“On behalf of Colgate, I am pleased to congratulate the students, parents and faculty of BelovED Community Charter School on winning the Recycled Playground Challenge,” said Justin Skala, President, North America and Global Sustainability, Colgate-Palmolive. “The effort and enthusiasm they put into protecting the environment has truly made a difference and we hope the new playground will bring smiles to students in Jersey City for years to come.”
“Our family ShopRite has been serving Jersey City for more than 60 years,” said Lawrence Inserra, president of Inserra Supermarkets, which owns the ShopRite of Metro Plaza in Jersey City. “A dedication to the communities we serve and a commitment to being a good neighbor are at the very core of my family’s mission. We are thrilled that the winner of this beautiful new playground is so close to home and we look forward to congratulating the students of BelovED at the upcoming unveiling.”
